Ferrari Built an EV. Nobody Saw This Coming.

Ferrari has spent 79 years building some of the most visceral, emotionally charged, noise-making machines in automotive history. Screaming V12s. Howling V8s. Engines that made grown adults emotional just by revving in a car park.
On May 25, 2026, in Rome, Ferrari turned all of that off.
The Ferrari Luce is here. It is the company's first fully electric production car. It has four doors, five seats, 1,035 horsepower, and a starting price of €550,000 — approximately $640,000. It was designed not by Ferrari's own styling team but by Sir Jony Ive — the man who designed the iPhone, the iMac, and the iPod — and his creative collective LoveFrom.
It is unlike any Ferrari that has ever existed. And the reaction has been exactly as divided as Ferrari predicted it would be.
What the Luce Actually Is
Start with what Ferrari built before getting to what it means.
Four electric motors — one per wheel — which help deliver more than 1,000 horsepower, a top speed above 310 kph, and increased agility for a car weighing more than 2.2 tons. The battery is a 122 kWh unit on an 800-volt architecture. With 1,035 horsepower, a 122-kWh battery, 330 miles of range, and a price approaching $640,000, the Ferrari EV Luce enters the market as one of the most ambitious electric performance cars ever created.
The performance numbers are extraordinary by any standard. Zero to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds. Zero to 124 mph in 6.8 seconds. Top speed above 193 mph. Ferrari utilises the four independently controllable electric motors not only for high performance but also for active torque vectoring on both axles. The system can distribute torque individually to each wheel during acceleration and deceleration, thereby controlling the vehicle's yaw moment.
The charging system is equally impressive. Ferrari developed a high-voltage DC/DC booster that increases the voltage supplied by the charging station and enables charging at up to 150 kW even at pure 400-volt charging stations. At 800-volt fast chargers, the Ferrari Luce can charge at up to 350 kW. The vehicle can recharge 70 kWh in 20 minutes at a sufficiently powerful fast-charging station.
The Design: Jony Ive's Ferrari
This is where the Luce becomes genuinely unprecedented. Ferrari has never outsourced its design to an external creative agency in its history. For the Luce, it brought in Sir Jony Ive — whose design CV includes the original iMac, the iPod, the iPhone, the Apple Watch, and the MacBook Pro — and his partner Marc Newson through their collective LoveFrom.
The result is a car that looks like nothing Ferrari has ever produced. It has rear-hinged coach doors, a distinctive cockpit complete with a flying bridge C pillar, and a genuinely concept-y vibe. The rear wheels measure a whopping 24 inches in diameter, the fronts 23 inches.
The interior is perhaps the most radical departure. The real triumph here is the interior, which reads as a total rejection of the screen-ification of cars. Sure, there is a touchscreen front and centre, with a slick user interface. But the Luce also packs in a wide array of satisfying switches and clicky toggles for the drive modes, windshield wipers, climate controls, and more. In a world where every car interior is becoming a tablet on wheels, Ferrari and Jony Ive went in the opposite direction. Physical controls. Considered switches. Objects designed to be touched rather than swiped.
Interior forms are simplified and rationalised in service of the driving experience. All-wheel drive, four doors and a five-seat configuration create the most spacious and versatile Ferrari ever — without compromising performance.
The Sound Problem — And Ferrari's Extraordinary Solution
An electric Ferrari without engine noise is a philosophical problem as much as an engineering one. The sound of a Ferrari engine is not incidental to the experience. For millions of fans, it is the experience. The Luce has no engine. It produces no exhaust note.
Ferrari's solution is remarkable. Sound in the Luce is generated from the drivetrain itself via a precision accelerometer mounted at the centre of the rear axle housing, which captures vibration from rotating components. Ferrari says the signal is filtered, equalised and amplified in real time using a patented system, with output via both internal cabin speakers and an external amplification system. Sound is active only in the Performance e-Manettino position.
This is not a synthesised engine note played through speakers — a trick other manufacturers have used with mixed results. Ferrari is amplifying the actual mechanical sounds of its electric drivetrain. The noise the Luce makes is real. It is just not what anyone expected a Ferrari to sound like.
Three Driving Modes — Including One Called Range
Three e-Manettino driving modes are offered: Range — 320 kW, predominantly rear-wheel drive, 260 km/h top speed; Tour — 460 kW, all-wheel drive, 260 km/h; and Performance — 725 kW, all-wheel drive, 310 km/h.
The existence of a mode called Range on a Ferrari is one of the more surreal details of the Luce story. Ferrari drivers have never previously needed to think about range. They have needed to think about tyre wear, fuel strategy on track days, and whether to use the launch control system. Managing energy consumption is a different mindset — and the Range mode exists to help Luce owners navigate that new reality without anxiety.
In Range mode, power is limited to 320 kW, drive is primarily via the rear wheels, and the top speed is 260 km/h. For most driving situations, 320 kW — still equivalent to approximately 430 horsepower — is more than sufficient. The Luce in Range mode is still significantly faster than most cars on any public road.
The Price and What It Means
€550,000 in Europe. Approximately $640,000 in the United States. The Luce went on sale in China on 27 June 2026 with 88 units, all of which sold out. China sold out immediately. Deliveries in Europe and the United States begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with American deliveries expected in Q2 2027.
At this price, the Luce competes with the Rolls-Royce Spectre, the Bentley Flying Spur, and the Aston Martin Rapide — all cars whose buyers are not primarily motivated by performance specifications. They are motivated by exclusivity, craftsmanship, and the meaning that comes with the badge on the bonnet.
Ferrari's badge carries more meaning than almost any other in the automotive world. Whether that meaning survives the transition to electric power is the question the Luce is designed to answer — and the market will provide that answer over the next two to three years of deliveries.
The Controversy: Ferrari Fans Are Not Happy
It would be dishonest to write about the Luce without acknowledging that a significant portion of Ferrari's traditional fanbase has reacted with genuine anger.
The car received a poor reception after its reveal, with much of the discussion focused on the Luce's styling and its role as Ferrari's first battery-electric production model. The Guardian described the design as divisive and reported that some analysts questioned whether the model's saloon-like form matched Ferrari's traditional sports-car image. Ferrari fans and car enthusiasts strongly criticised the car's design.
Former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo — the man who oversaw the company's most celebrated era of both road and racing cars — was publicly critical, suggesting Ferrari risks destroying a legend by pursuing the Luce's direction.
Ferrari's response, delivered by CEO Benedetto Vigna, was essentially: we know, and we disagree. Emanuele Carando, the automaker's global head of product marketing, said: the reaction we are going to have among our customer base is going to be very much mixed. People will love it, and people will hate it.
They were right on both counts.
Why Ferrari Did This — The Strategic Logic
Ferrari revealed its strategic roadmap in October 2025. By 2030, battery-electric models are targeted at 20 percent of the company's product portfolio. Hybrids will account for a further 40 percent. The remaining 40 percent will be conventional combustion-engine vehicles.
The Luce is not Ferrari abandoning its heritage. It is Ferrari extending its reach into a customer segment — affluent families who want Ferrari's prestige and performance but need four doors and five seats — that no previous Ferrari model could address. Ferrari says that plus its largest cargo area ever at 21 cubic feet makes the Luce its most every-day-drivable vehicle yet.
Ferrari is hoping that will also give it the opportunity to move further into markets such as China, where EVs are already widespread and big petrol cars are heavily taxed. The China sell-out of 88 units in June 2026 validated that logic immediately.

The comparison that matters most is not the performance numbers — it is the badge. A Tesla Model S Plaid produces comparable power for $550,000 less. Nobody buying a Ferrari Luce is doing so because they could not afford a Tesla.
