I Drove 1,000 Miles With 4 Different Dash Cams — Here Is What Actually Happened

Every dash cam review on the internet was written at a desk.

Ours was not.

We drove 1,000 miles across motorways, A-roads, city centres, car parks, and one genuinely dark stretch of countryside at 11pm to find out what four different dash cams actually do when the conditions stop being ideal. No controlled studio. No cherry-picked footage. Just real roads, real traffic, and four cameras recording every minute of it.

Here is what we found.

The Setup

Four cameras mounted simultaneously across the windscreen. Same car. Same journey. Same conditions. The only variable was the camera.

We tested across five specific conditions that matter to real drivers:

  • Motorway/highway driving at speed — number plate capture at distance
  • Urban stop-start traffic — wide angle performance and detail in complex environments
  • Tunnel entry and exit — the high-contrast transition that exposes weak sensors immediately
  • Night driving on unlit roads — the condition where most serious footage is needed and most cameras fail
  • Car park — stationary parking mode performance in poor lighting

The results were not what we expected.

Day One: The Motorway

The motorway leg runs 340 miles. Three lanes. Variable traffic. Speeds between 60 and 70mph. This is the most forgiving test for any dash cam — daylight, consistent lighting, predictable conditions.

All four cameras produced usable footage in these conditions. The differences were subtle but present. Number plates at 40 metres were readable on all units. At 60 metres, two cameras started to struggle with plates on white vans in direct sunlight — the high-contrast combination that exposes dynamic range limitations.

The cameras with Sony STARVIS 2 sensors handled the white van test significantly better. The sensor's improved dynamic range kept both the bright van body and the darker plate text within readable range simultaneously. The cameras without STARVIS 2 either exposed the plate correctly while blowing out the van body, or preserved the van body while losing the plate detail.

This matters in an insurance context. A hit from a white van in bright daylight — one of the most common UK motorway incident types — is exactly where this difference shows up in footage that will be reviewed by insurers.

The Tunnel Test

Tunnels are brutal for dash cams. You enter from bright daylight into sudden darkness, or exit from darkness into blinding light. The camera has milliseconds to adjust its exposure. Slow sensor response produces footage that is either completely black on entry or completely white on exit — unusable for the few seconds when an incident is most likely to happen.

This test produced the most dramatic difference between cameras on the entire journey.

The budget cameras — anything without a quality Sony sensor — produced between 1.5 and 3 seconds of unusable footage on tunnel entry and exit. Three seconds at 70mph is approximately 90 metres of blind recording. In those 90 metres, a driver could brake suddenly, a lorry could merge without signalling, or debris could appear on the road. Three seconds of black footage means three seconds of no evidence.

The STARVIS 2 cameras adapted in under half a second. Footage was usable from the moment of entry. Plates were readable within one second of tunnel exit into bright light.

Half a second versus three seconds sounds like a small difference until you think about what can happen in 2.5 seconds at motorway speed.

The Night Drive

This is the test that matters most and the one that most dash cam reviews skip entirely.

The route: 47 miles of unlit A-road through countryside. No street lighting for stretches of 4 to 6 miles. Oncoming headlights creating extreme contrast conditions. Wet road surface reflecting light unpredictably. Speed between 50 and 60mph.

This is also the most legally critical recording environment. Incidents on unlit rural roads are disproportionately likely to result in disputed liability — there are rarely witnesses, there is no CCTV coverage, and the darkness that makes these roads dangerous also makes evidence collection difficult.

Two cameras produced footage that would be usable in an insurance dispute. Two produced footage we would describe as legally unusable — you could confirm a car was there, but plate numbers were consistently unreadable and driver behaviour was impossible to assess.

The REDTIGER F7NA produced footage we reviewed multiple times because we kept assuming the camera must have had some additional light source. It did not. The Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor was simply performing at a level that smaller sensors cannot match in genuine darkness. Number plates on approaching vehicles were readable at 25 metres in conditions where the competing cameras lost them at 10 metres.

The Car Park Test

Car parks are where most vehicle damage happens and where dash cam footage is least expected. A hit-and-run in a supermarket car park, a door opened into your vehicle, a reversing van — these incidents happen daily and almost never have witnesses.

Parking mode testing required leaving all four cameras running on a hardwired connection for four hours in an underground car park. Lighting: poor fluorescent coverage with significant dark areas between bays.

The parking mode test revealed something that no spec sheet tells you: parking mode footage quality varies dramatically by camera, and the gap between best and worst is even wider than in normal recording.

The REDTIGER F7NA's parking mode footage — activated by motion detection — captured clear footage of every vehicle that moved within its field of view during the four hour test period. Plates were readable on vehicles that were not even directly adjacent. The footage would support an insurance claim for any incident that occurred within the camera's coverage area.

One budget camera's parking mode footage was so dark that we could confirm movement occurred but could not identify any vehicle details. For parking mode purposes, that camera is essentially non-functional in poor lighting — which is when parking incidents most often happen.

The City Centre Test

Urban driving is the environment where wide angle coverage matters most. Cyclists approaching from the side. Pedestrians stepping off the kerb. Vehicles emerging from side streets. The wider the front angle, the more of this activity is captured.

The Honest Verdict After 1,000 Miles

We expected this test to produce a closer result. We expected the budget cameras to close the gap in some conditions. They did not.

The Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, the 170-degree angle, and the parking mode performance combined to produce footage that was consistently better than anything else we mounted on the windscreen for this test.

The budget cameras — unnamed here because their performance in darkness was genuinely poor — would not be our recommendation for anyone who drives on unlit roads or parks in areas without strong artificial lighting.

What 1,000 Miles Taught Us About Dash Cam Buying

Three things we learned that spec sheets do not tell you:

1. Night performance is non-negotiable. You will not be in an accident in a photography studio. You will be on a road, potentially in the dark, potentially in a tunnel, potentially in a car park at midnight. Buy a camera that performs in those conditions.

2. Parking mode is the feature most buyers undervalue. You spend more time parked than driving. The camera needs to work when the engine is off. Not all parking modes are equal.

3. The gap between sensor generations is real. Sony STARVIS 2 versus STARVIS 1 is not a marketing distinction. In real-world low-light conditions, the footage quality difference is significant enough to affect the outcome of an insurance claim.
